On 26 April 2005 the last Syrian soldiers left Lebanon after 29 years of military presence, in application of Resolution 1559 and under the pressure of Hariri's assassination. On the eve of the last soldiers' departure, on 25 April, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said that "the Lebanese must rely on themselves", thanked Syria, rejected putting the resistance's weapons on the 1559 agenda because it is "a resistance, not a militia", and called for agreement on the date and law of the elections.
