On 9 August 2012 the Information Branch arrested the former minister Michel Samaha after seizing explosives he had carried from Damascus on the instructions of Major General Ali Mamlouk to carry out bombings in Akkar; he was later sentenced to prison, and the affair revealed the continuation of Syrian security work in Lebanon.
