At the start of August 2010, as part of the campaign to uncover spy networks that had arrested more than a hundred people since April 2009, the Information Branch arrested the retired brigadier Fayez Karam, former head of the army's counter-terrorism and counter-espionage unit and a leading figure in the Free Patriotic Movement, on the charge of passing information about Hezbollah and the Movement to Israel. The military court sentenced him in September 2011 to two years' hard labour, and the Movement held that the verdict had not proved espionage.
