From 1 July to 7 October 1978 the Syrian deterrent forces shelled Ashrafieh, Ain el-Remmaneh and East Beirut after clashes with the Lebanese Forces; hundreds were killed and thousands displaced. It ended with Security Council Resolution 436 and the Syrians' withdrawal from the Christian areas.
