On 18 January 1976 the militias of the Kataeb, the Tigers of the Ahrar, the Guardians of the Cedars and the Tanzim stormed the Karantina and Maslakh district near the port of Beirut, a poor quarter inhabited by Kurds, Syrians, Palestinians and Lebanese Muslims under the protection of the PLO; between 600 and 1,500 people were killed and some 20,000 driven out before the district was burned and bulldozed. Two days later came the Damour massacre, presented as a reply to it.
