In 1982, after the Israeli invasion, Brigadier Ghazi Kanaan was appointed head of Syrian security and reconnaissance in Lebanon in succession to Major General Mohammed Ghanem. From his headquarters in Anjar in the Bekaa he ran, until 2002, appointments, electoral alliances, the formation of governments and the distribution of influence among the parties and militias, and then among the pillars of the post-Taif regime; his era became known as "the tutelage". He was recalled to Damascus in October 2002, where he took over the Political Security Directorate and then the interior ministry.
