The first nucleus and field moves to form this faction began with the senior founding officers (Lieutenant Colonel pilot Fahim al-Hajj, Major Ibrahim Shahine and First Lieutenant Jamil al-Sayyed) in the barracks and air base at Rayak on 8 March 1976, as a direct reaction to the breakaway movement of the "Arab Army of Lebanon" under Ahmad al-Khatib and the disintegration of the Lebanese army's joints.
