At dawn on 13 October 1990 the Syrian army, with air cover and together with the legitimate Lebanese army, attacked Baabda palace and the defence ministry; Aoun took refuge in the French embassy and ordered his forces to surrender, and dozens of captured soldiers were killed at Dahr al-Wahsh.
