On 4 September 1983, as soon as Israel withdrew from the Chouf, the Mountain War broke out between the Progressive Socialist Party and the Lebanese Forces with the army. It ended with the expulsion of the Forces, the displacement of tens of thousands of the Chouf's Christians, massacres on both sides, and the siege of the army at Souk el-Gharb.
