On 23 February 2006, the day after the bombing of the shrine of the two Askari Imams in Samarra, Hezbollah held a mass sit-in at the Raya stadium in the southern suburbs, the participants wearing shrouds to express readiness to die in defence of the shrines. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called the bombing a crime that had wounded the hearts of Muslims and blamed the American occupation seeking strife, the takfiri groups that want a Shia–Sunni war, and "Zionist forces in Iraq", calling on Shia and Sunnis not to trade accusations: "It is not permissible to hurl accusations and incite people", and "whoever works to widen the strife is a traitor to God and His Messenger."
