From 11 June 1982 an alliance of fighters of the Amal Movement, the Communist Party's Popular Guard and the PLO fought the battle of Khalde at Beirut's southern entrance, halting the Israeli advance towards the airport and the capital, in the first serious ground resistance the Israeli army met on its way to Beirut. Khalde counts as a founding moment: a battle fought by Lebanese from Amal and the nationalist parties alongside the Palestinians, from whose ranks the founders of the National Resistance Front and the Islamic Resistance later emerged.
