The resignation was preceded by sit-ins and strikes throughout 1991–1992 over the collapse of the lira (from 880 to the dollar in 1990 to about 3,000 in May 1992), reaching their peak in the "hunger uprising" of 6 May 1992 with burning tyres and closed roads.
