●Chehab declines to run again
PartiesPresidency
On 4 August 1970 former president Fouad Chehab issued a statement declining to run for the presidency despite his supporters' pressure, saying that "the Lebanese institutions in their present state are not fit to lead the country"; his withdrawal opened the way for Frangieh to win by one vote over the Chehabists' candidate Elias Sarkis.
