On the morning of 23 October 1983 two suicide bombers drove trucks into the Marine barracks near the airport (241 dead) and the French paratroopers' base in Jnah (58 dead): the Marines' heaviest loss since Iwo Jima. The attacks led to the withdrawal of the Multinational Force.
