On 2 August 2009 Walid Jumblatt announced at the Socialist Party's congress his departure from 14 March, holding that the alliance had been "a necessity" that had ended; he positioned himself in the centre and repaired his relationship with Damascus and Hezbollah, changing the balance in parliament.
