On the night of 26 November 1998 two Israeli soldiers were killed by a bomb planted by the mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance at the border wire near the Blat position in the western sector; the next day Netanyahu cut short his European tour from Britain, cancelled the Spanish leg and promised to review tactics, holding the Lebanese government "directly responsible". Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah recounted five weeks later that the mujahideen had planted the bomb a few metres from the wire at an unknown crossing gate, waited for the soldiers to gather at night and filmed the operation, and the Israeli commanders admitted they were facing "a professional guerrilla force".
