●General Sami al-Khatib named to lead the army in West Beirut

The appointment came by decision of the government of Salim al-Hoss (which was running the affairs of the western areas of Beirut), in reply to President Amine Gemayel's appointment of the army commander General Michel Aoun as head of a transitional military government.
