✸Assassination attempt on US Ambassador John Gunther Dean

On 27 August 1980 the American ambassador in Beirut John Gunther Dean survived an assassination attempt; Dean himself believed Israel was behind the attempt. The "Front for the Liberation of Lebanon from Foreigners" claimed the operation, which the Israeli journalist Ronen Bergman revealed in 2018 to have been a front run by Israeli military intelligence; the magazine "MERIP" at the time saw in it a joint cover for the Kataeb, elements of Lebanese army intelligence and Israeli intelligence.
