At dawn on 21 August 2013 hundreds of civilians were killed by sarin gas in the Eastern Ghouta of Damascus; Washington held the regime responsible and threatened a military strike, then backed down in a Russian–American agreement in September for the handover of the chemical arsenal. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah commented on 23 September, warning against the strike and accusing the opposition.
