On the night of 31 December 1961 officers of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party attempted a coup against President Fouad Chehab with the support of party members; it was foiled within hours. Thousands of party members were arrested and the party dissolved, and the Deuxième Bureau's influence over political life widened until 1970.
