On 15 July 1958 Chamoun asked the United States to send Marines to put down the demonstrations, invoking the Eisenhower Doctrine on the pretext that the opposition would pull Lebanon into the Soviet tide. The United States landed some 14,000 troops on the beaches of Beirut in the first application of the Eisenhower Doctrine; they left in October after Chehab's election.
