On 25 May 2008 parliament elected the army commander Michel Sleiman president of the republic in application of the Doha Agreement, after a vacancy of six months since the end of Lahoud's term. The next day Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah thanked Qatar for the Doha Agreement (which indicates that Hezbollah's aim is coexistence, not control of Lebanon) and saw in Sleiman's election and his oath speech "a spirit of concord", calling for "binding the wounds and gathering the ranks" and affirming that "the resistance's weapons are for confronting the enemy and liberating the land and the prisoners".
