The Security Council adopted Resolution 1559, calling for the withdrawal of the Syrian army from Lebanon and the disarming of the militias.
Note: Resolution 1559 was issued by the Security Council and is therefore legally binding; it demanded the withdrawal of foreign forces, the disbanding of the militias and respect for the presidential election. But it was issued without an official Lebanese request and on an American–French initiative, so it split the Lebanese between those who saw it as a recovery of sovereignty and those who saw it as an internationalisation aimed at the resistance.
