On 27 July 1990 the French president François Mitterrand pardoned Anis Naccache and four members of the group that had tried to assassinate the former Iranian prime minister Shapour Bakhtiar in Paris in 1980, after ten years in prison, and they were deported at once to Tehran. His release had been the demand of the kidnappers of the French hostages in Beirut since 1985, and the French press accused the government of a deal with Iran following the release of the last hostages in 1988.
