On 6 August 2020, two days after the port explosion, Emmanuel Macron visited Beirut and walked through Gemmayzeh amid chants against the political class, then returned on 1 September and gathered the leaders at the Résidence des Pins around a reform "road map" and a mission government within two weeks; Mustapha Adib was designated on 31 August.
