On 31 August 1995 Sheikh Nizar al-Halabi, head of the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (al-Ahbash), was shot dead in Beirut; the Salafi group "Usbat al-Ansar" in Ain el-Hilweh claimed it, and three of the perpetrators were executed in 1997. The first appearance of the jihadist current in Lebanon after the war.
